In an effort to renew its efforts to pass legislation in support of affordable housing in Florida, the Sadowski Housing Coalition, comprised of 24 statewide organizations, including the Florida Realtors, Associated Industries of Florida, Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida AARP and Florida Bankers Association, engaged Bascom Communications & Consulting, LLC (BCC) to conduct a comprehensive education and earned media campaign for the 2011 Legislative Session to reach out to legislators, decision makers, and the public about the importance and economic impact of using housing trust fund dollars for their intended purpose. The end result was the passage of House Bill 639, repealing the cap on the Sadowski state and local housing trust funds, an effort the coalition had been pushing since 2007.
Under the new slogan of “Housing = Jobs,” the coalition reached out to educate lawmakers and the general public on the impact of Florida’s affordable housing programs on our ailing economy and their potential to generate more than 15,000 jobs and more than $1.4 billion in economic impact. On April 13, 2011, the Sadowski Coalition held its Annual Housing Day Rally on the steps of the Old Capitol where coalition members addressed the media on the need to preserve the state and local housing trust funds and to repeal the arbitrary cap in order for these programs to have a chance to fulfill their promise of employment and economic growth for Floridians.
BCC led the coordinated aggressive strategic communications and media outreach efforts to secure statewide editorial endorsements and LTE placements in support for affordable housing legislation. BCC also engaged in activating the public to contact local legislators and decision makers with the unified message to preserve the state and local housing trust funds and to support the coalition’s legislative efforts.
